Hogwarts Homeschool

So, now that you've had a good laugh, I want to share with you what I've been obsessing about all weekend (besides sitting on the couch to watch the Olympics)!

You may or may not know that I'm a big Harry Potter fan. One of the sessions I attended at the homeschooling conference was about how to homeschool Harry Potter-style.

The three moms who led the session formed a co-op to share the work (and fun!) of creating Hogwarts "lessons" and activities for their HP-crazed kids. These women were SO creative -- though they had lots of help from online resources, and are putting it all on their blog to share with anyone who wants to do the same!

I've been busy making lists of things we need and activities and outings to Potterfy. Wands and robes are first, of course. Plenty of parchment for owl posts. I'm trying not to spend too much money on books from Flourish & Botts. I did, however, invest in a set of kits for Spells and Potions.

As I'm fairly strong in Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures and Transfiguration, a little more help from Professors Sprout, Hagrid, and McGonagall, and we'll have plenty to keep us busy over the next few months!

I'm also excited to spend more time studying Defense Against the Dark Arts with my boys. We haven't done regular devotionals before, and this is inspiring in an odd kind of way.

And, yes, we're still unschoolers. ;)

Sounds like you all are having tons of fun with that. My kids don't go in for that sort of thing though I have found Narnia inspiring many activities around here--my oldest is Narnia obsessed. :)

Ohmigosh, what a great idea and so much fun! Unfortunately, I doubt my husband would go for it...he already has suspicious feelings about Harry Potter. :P

Argh- would you believe I have only seen the FIRST movie?? I am soo far behind.

Nonetheless, you sound like you are having tons of fun.

Oh my gosh, I just read your msg on my blog comments, and couldn't figure out at all how you'd found me on the HH blog.

And then I checked. Ack. It is so strange to see your words quoted elsewhere than where you (I) put them. ;)

Anyway, I especially chuckled because I'd following a link to YOUR blog and had put you in my bloglines, and I'd also added you to the homeschool blog links on my blog, except it's not showing up, so I'll need to fix that. Of course, most of the readers there are about 10 of them - a few friends who sort of keep in touch this way) aren't homeschoolers, but that's okay.

Anyway, thanks for visiting and commenting. As for leaving the charter, I'm pretty much ready to do it, but I prefer to wait until my hubby is supportive, too. Until then, I'll just bide my time. :) Of course, the charter really does help in many ways b/c we're in a pretty small place (Tehachapi) and quite far from so many things, but you're right - if you want to make it happen, it will happen.

Anyway, sorry for the lengthy comment, and thanks again for the visit and kind words. :)

I was at the same session and was also inspired. I had thought of this before and actually we have done this sort of thing with other subjects, I call it themeschooling, it's like a unit study gone wild! We are going to co-op Hogwarts at home as well and have made our owl post boxes and are currently working on uniforms and wands. I had also thought about using Defense Against the Dark Arts in our Hogwarts school to pursue our spiritual passions as well. Hurray for the freedom of home learning!
