On the road: Yellowstone National Park

We made it! We entered Yellowstone National Park at the northern entrance in Montana. Our first stop was Yellowstone Fort, where the elk really do hang out in the middle of the lawn.

Next up, the terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs, which were absolutely beautiful.

It's easy to forget that you're on top of an enormous volcano while admiring the wildflowers surrounding Yellowstone River...

The boys were less interested in the geology of the park than I expected, but very interested in the wildlife. And yes, it really is the land where the buffalo -- ahem, bison -- roam right down the street.

The very steamy, and pretty blue Emerald Spring...

We arrived at Steamboat Geyser just in time for a park ranger lecture, and an eruption of steam and boiling water...

Fun facts about Yellowstone...
  • Between one and three thousand earthquakes occur in the park each year.
  • Half of the world's geothermal features are found in Yellowstone.
  • The park's more than 300 geysers make up two-thirds of all those found on Earth.
More scenery, and bison. These dudes are huge. Don't get too close! (Close-ups were all taken through the car window.)

The 308-foot drop of the Lower Falls...

Which flow through the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone...

Lake Yellowstone seems to go on forever...

But our visit to Yellowstone National Park was all too short. We could have soaked up its abundant natural beauty for many more days. The boys were really hoping we'd see a grizzly bear... and finally, we did!

As we were leaving the park, we drove right by one, and stopped to watch him for a while.

How blessed we are that our nation's leaders thought to preserve this incredible piece of God's creation for future generations to enjoy before it was too late!
